Reading Through My Bookshelf: 5 Months

I'm not even through the first shelf of my bookshelf, but I keep on trekkin'!  The top shelf holds lots of long books - Little Women, Hitch-hiker's Guide Trilogy, The Count of Monte Cristo - so I expect I'll go more quickly soon.

Books I've read so far:  The Secret Garden; Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass; The Perks of Being a Wallflower; Girl With A Pearl Earring; The Hunger Games Trilogy; Catherine Called Birdy (as well as all the books from previous months)

I also read The Outsiders and Americanah as part of my book club.

What I liked:  I also read some essays about Lewis Carroll online.  There are some speculations that his interest in little girls was exaggerated, to cover for affairs he may have had with married women!  Additionally, many of his "child friends" were actually women in their late teens.  I know this isn't the most comfortable idea for many people, but I find Carroll's life quite interesting - J.M. Barrie too.

I also enjoyed re-reading the Hunger Games.  They were just as engrossing as the first time around!

What I disliked:  I was not a fan of The Secret Garden.  I found Colin insufferably annoying.  I think he needed a serious ego check.

Something that surprised me:  I liked Americanah much more than I thought I would.  I thought it was going to be a politically charged book, about race relations.  While race relations were a factor, it was, overall, a love story.

What I'm reading next:  I'm currently about a third of the way through The Count of Monte Cristo; we'll be reading Medea for book club.

Have you read anything interesting lately?

  1. I don't know that I've ever actually read much of Lewis Carroll--just Jabberwocky in some sort of book of poems and maybe a few other excerpts when I was in school. It's always very interesting to read about the backstory and the character of the authors of classic fiction...
